Palmetto Gold Award

The Palmetto Gold Award was created by the Education Accountability Act to recognize and award academic achievement. Columbia High School was recognized at the September 8th School Board Meeting for being among three Richland One schools and 100 schools statewide that are sharing their success stories through the S.C. Department of Education's 2008-2009 Palmetto Gold and Silver Awards Showcase.

Columbia High School

Founded in 1884, Columbia High School operates in an urban area located in the capital city, Columbia, South Carolina.  Student enrollment for the 2009-2010 school year is approximately 720.

The leadership team of Columbia High School has identified the following goals for 2009-10:
  • To increase the passing rate of students taking both subtests of the HSAP for the first time.
  • To increase the longitudinal passage rate of students taking HSAP.
  • To increase the passage rates for students taking End of Course examinations.
  • To systemically provide high quality instruction in a safe, positive, and challenging environment.
  • To promote, build, and improve the five STEMS related academies in an effort to increase the number of completers in all academies.

These goals represent a focus on improving teaching and learning across various grade levels and subject areas. We are committed to improving the instructional process at Columbia High School while serving the needs of our students and community.

We believe that:

  • Everyone learns.
  • Each person has immeasurable worth and needs to be valued.
  • Every person is responsible for his/her choices and actions.
  • Integrity governs our behavior.
  • People are interdependent.
  • Change provides opportunity for growth.
  • Excellence is attainable.
